Closing Time: A Checklist

Closing the pool is an essential part of the fall. Doing it properly can make or break your spring for the next season—a pool closed incorrectly is a pool that risks large amounts of (expensive!) damage as the temperature drops. As such, we generally recommend having a professional close your pool for the season, and if you are planning to do it yourself, make sure you research the process very thoroughly.

But before you close the pool, you’ll want to have a few chores done to save yourself a headache in the spring.

#1 – Clean your filter

For anyone who has a sand or cartridge filter, you’ll want to give it a bit of a refresh before closing. It is a common misconception that sand filters cannot be cleaned! The same chemical that is used in cleaning cartridges can be used to clean your sand. If you’re unsure how to do this, feel free to give us a call or text us at 905-319-7665 for a short tutorial.

For those with AFM Glass filters, there is no need to go through this process, as your filter media is self-cleaning.

#2 – Clean your salt cell (if applicable)

This can be done at the end of the season or at the beginning. Grab your bottle of cell cleaning product (our favourite is Klean Cell) and get to work!

#3 – Put your chemicals away safely

Any chemicals you have left over from the current season should be stored in a dry, temperature-controlled space for the winter. This will allow them to be used next season without issue.

#4 – Make sure your supplies for closing are available

Get ready to close! Whether you’re doing it yourself or having a professional handle it, you’ll want to take stock of any necessary closing supplies before the day arrives to use them. Check the state of your winter cover, see how any safety cover grommets are doing, count your water bags, etc.
